FC Porto jumped in the driver's seat late in the opening quarter and held on the rest of the way to prevail 70-62 over Zorg en Zekerheid Leiden on the road and lock third-place in Group G, maintaining an option to advance to the Round of 32.
Turning Point: Porto forced Leiden to undergo a five-minute dry spell bridging the first and second quarter and used a 10-0 run during that stretch to establish a 23-12 lead. Leiden balanced proceedings after that and managed to reduce the gap to six points early in the fourth and again 83 seconds from the final buzzer, but the hosts wasted their last three possessions and never came closer.
Stats Don't Lie: The two teams were equally matched across several stat lines but Leiden's starters had to try that much harder, as the hosts' second unit contributed 15 points and Porto got 35 points off the bench.
Game Hero: Leiden and Porto combined for 40 turnovers but Nicholas Washburn was a bright exception as he did not put a foot wrong all night, also collecting 13 points and three rebounds.
The Bottom Line: Porto improved to 2-3 and hope to beat Fraport Skyliners next week so that they finish at 3-3 and put in a strong bid for one of the top two spots reserved for the best third-placed teams in Conference 1. Leiden dropped to 0-5 and will finish in fourth place in the group.
