Valeriya Musina took CCC Polkowice to victory with a 17-point contribution
CCC Polkowice used an excellent opening quarter on Wednesday night to win 57-53 over Perfumerias Avenida at home and claim their second victory in a row and third in this EuroLeague Women season.
Polkowice, who have now greatly improved their chances of a top-four finish in Group C thanks to their recent rise in form, came out guns blazing and jumped out to a 26-11 lead on a Belinda Snell three-pointer shortly before the end of the first quarter.
The initial enthusiasm of the home team subsided in the second frame and Polkowice only scored 12 points in the period, but as there were no signs of a reaction from the shell-shocked Spanish visitors, the Polish side still led 38-23 at half-time.
Avenida took their time in mounting a comeback attempt after the break but Marija Rezan, with a lay-up, reduced the gap to 51-41 at the end of the third and the visitors begun chipping away at the gap in earnest during the final frame.
Eshaya Murphy made the most of a Polkowice turnover by converting an and-one play with just 34 seconds left on the clock to reduce to three points, 56-53, for the first time all night.
Polkowice turned the ball over again on the next possession but Marta Fernandez missed a lay-up that would have made it a one-point game with 23 seconds remaining.
Snell drew a foul on the other end of the floor and made one of her two free throws to give the hosts a four-point cushion, effectively sealing victory.
Valeriya Musina paved the way for Polkowice with 17 points and seven rebounds, and Snell finished with 15 points.
Murphy collected a game-high 26 points and Angelica Robinson picked up a double-double of 11 points and 15 rebounds for Avenida in defeat.
