RIVAS GET HONTI

Rivas Ecopolis have lured Hungary international Katalin Honti to the Madrid region club from EuroLeague Women champions Ros Casares.

The 24-year-old, who left long-time club UNIQA Euroleasing Sopron in Hungary for Valencia last summer, appeared in 16 European games for Ros.

The 1.78m Hungary international should prove to be an astute signing by a Rivas outfit that made a stunning run to the EuroLeague Women Final Eight in Istanbul but then waved good-bye to veterans Amaya Valdemoro, Elisa Aguilar and Asjha Jones.

Rivas look as if they are going to remain a very competitive team.

They have signed young Spanish internationals Laura Nicholls, Ana Cruz and Vega Gimeno to extensions along with captain Clara Bermejo, and they have also acquired promising Bulgaria forward Jaklin Zlatanova.

Coach Miguel Méndez signed a one-year contract extension with Rivas, too.

In announcing Honti's signing, Rivas said in a statement: "This is a guard who is able to contribute in various aspects of the game, a proven scorer when the situation requires it and a good defender."

Rivas also stressed that they are an ideal team for someone like Honti.

"The player has taken the time to choose the Rivas Ecopolis club to keep growing professionally in a team that continues to invest in players of proven quality and is hungry to continue growing and competing at the highest level," Rivas said.

FORT DEPARTS GDYNIA

Former Rivas Ecopolis coach Javier Fort has stepped down as coach of Lotos Gdynia, the club has announced.

Fort, who left Rivas after the 2010-11 season to lead the Polish side, steered the team to a third-place finish in the regular season with 20 wins and six defeats and into the semi-finals of the play-offs, where they fell to CCC Polkowice, 3-2.

Energa Torun then beat Gdynia in the battle for third with a 3-1 series victory.
