AVENIDA IN POLE POSITION

Having already pipped Rivas Ecopolis to the Spanish Super Cup, Perfumerias Avenida have also drawn first blood in the regular season schedule after winning 73-65.

Always on top, Avenida got their noses in front early and never looked back, at one stage leading by as many as 18 points.

Shay Murphy continued her good form for Avenida with a fine double-double of 17 points and 11 rebounds, whilst Croatian center Marija Rezan hauled down a superb 16 rebounds.

Rachel Allison replied with a team-high 19 points for Rivas.

WHALEN DAZZLES FOR DYNAMO

Lindsay Whalen finally pulled on a WBC Dynamo Moscow vest and could barely have made more of an impact as she went off for 30 points to carry her new side to a nail-biting 70-69 win against local rivals Sparta&K M.R. Vidnoje.

She was supported by Tatiana Vidmer who pulled down 16 rebounds as the winning team recovered from their SuperCup Women loss at UMMC Ekaterinburg last week.

There was more agony for Dynamo Kursk, whose miserable start to the Russian Premier League continued as Nadezhda Orenburg racked up a stunning 88-66 success, built upon a mesmerising 51 points from Dewanna Bonner and Temeka Johnson.

BOURGES AND VILLENEUVE STILL PERFECT

Tango Bourges and Villeneuve d'Ascq head into their respective EuroLeague Women and EuroCup Women seasons this week, yet to have tasted defeat this season and sat 6-0 in the French League.

Bourges had Australian center Marianna Tolo leading the charge with 12 points and eight rebounds in a 68-54 success at USO Mondeville, whilst Villeneuve d'Ascq squeezed out a 69-66 road win at Charleville who had also been unbeaten ahead of tip-off.

Geraldine Robert starred for BLMA in a 92-55 win at Hainaut Basket with 22 points and 10 rebounds, whilst Basket Landes continued their good run with a 70-59 victory at struggling Nantes Reze. Danielle Page and Olivia Epoupa shared 36 points for the winning team.

Alex Montgomery is likely to be the main weapon for Tarbes in EuroCup Women this year and she underlined why, with 25 points and 11 rebounds in a dramatic 76-73 overtime win against visiting Nice.

21. Alba Torrens (Galatasaray)

FANTASTIC FIVE FOR GALATASARAY

Galatasaray odeabank still sit proudly at the top of the Turkish TKBL with five wins from five games after cruising to a 78-56 win against TED Ankara. Sublime shooting displays by Alba Torrens, Bahar Caglar and Kelsey Bone provided the main thrust, with the trio going a combined 17-of-23 from the floor.

Istanbul Universitesi are at the forefront of the early title race after a similarly dominant 86-66 win at Canik Belediye, thanks to 21 points from Romanian national team star Gabriela Marginean.

Fenerbahce bounced back from their shock second league loss of the campaign last time out, to move to 3-2 after winning 72-56 in the Istanbul derby contest at Besiktas.

A perfect 8-of-8 shooting performance inside by Belarusian center Anastasiya Verameyenka did some damage, as did 17 points and 11 boards from Angel McCoughtry.

Meanwhile the pressure has been heaped onto last year‘s EuroLeague Women debutante Tarsus Belediye, who head into their EuroCup Women campaign this week low on confidence and with just one win in five to their name domestically. They slipped to a 69-64 home loss against Konak Belediyesi.

WIDER ROUND-UP

Wisla Can-Pack have a perfect eight wins from eight games in the Polish League after great shooting displays from summer signings Allie Quigley and Jantel Lavender gave them a 77-56 success at Szczecin.

Meanwhile CCC Polkowice overpowered Energa Torun 82-53 with five players reaching double-digits in a powerful team performance.

It was a boost since the club not only released Martyna Koc last week by mutual agreement, but were left reeling when Ausra Bimbaite was forced to return to Lithuania to continue rehabilitation from injury, suggesting she won't be suiting up any time soon in EuroLeague Women.

There was a big clash in Italy as Gesam Gas Lucca hosted Beretta Famila Schio and it was the visitors who prevailed with a 74-64 win as French center Elodie Godin fired 21 points and Laura Macchi was just one point behind with a similarly impressive tally.

In the Czech ZBL, there was a win for heavyweights ZVVZ USK Prague, who are now 13 games unbeaten after 22 points and eight rebounds from Kia Vaughn handed them a 75-53 win in the derby against city rivals VS Prague.

Alena Hanusova (23 points) was the standout performer for third-placed BK Imos Brno who won 77-66 at DSK Basketball.
