Lapena Takes Over At Avenida

EUROLEAGUE WOMEN

Former EuroLeague Women champions Pefumerias Avenida have handed the task of resurrecting their disappointing season to Victor Lapena.

The new head coach will succeed Alberto Miranda, whom having jumped into the hot-seat only a few months ago, has paid the penalty for an uninspiring campaign.

Under his guidance, the Salamanca club only managed to harvest two wins from eight games in Group C, meaning their chances of making the post season are now hanging by a thread.

Domestically, Avenida have just about kept themselves in the Liga Femenina title race, but have laboured behind unbeaten Rivas Ecopolis during a season which they were expected to be at the forefront of things with their great rivals Ros Casares no longer around.

Lapena, who recently resigned his position in Pamplona with UNB Obenasa, has also previously coached at both Cadi La Seu D'Urgell and Mann Filter Zaragoza, and was on the initial short-list for the position during the summer.

The 37-year-old is also an integral part of the Spanish national team coaching structure, having been head coach of Spain's U17 World Championship squad and as an assistant to Lucas Mondelo for the senior team.

The new play-caller will no doubt feel he has a reasonable chance of getting off to a winning start when EuroLeague Women resumes, since Avenida face USO Mondeville on home soil, although they then face Group favourites Galatasaray and UMMC Ekaterinburg before wrapping up at Novi Zagreb.
