Targoviste Ring The Changes

The mid-season break has proven a busy one for Municipal Targoviste who have used the gap in the schedule to make a number of changes to their roster in a bid to continue their challenge for a top four spot in EuroLeague Women Group B.

With three wins from eight games, the club has competed reasonably well so far this season, having returned to the elite level after a lengthy absence.

The club has parted ways with five players including Milka Bjelica, Natalie Novosel, Chioma Nnamaka, Elina Babkina and Monique Currie.

Having packed their bags, Babkina and Currie who were the second and third top scorers, have already secured new deals elsewhere at ZVVZ USK Prague and Perfumerias Avenida respectively.

Latvian national team guard Babkina, who has previously played in the competition with Lotos Gdynia and Fenerbahce, enjoyed a solid campaign with Targoviste, averaging a respectable 10.1 points and 3.9 assists per game.

The versatile Currie meanwhile is also moving to Group C, having penned a deal in Salamanca. However, she won't face her former team-mate since Perfumerias Avenida have already played USK Prague twice.

Her inside-outside presence will prove to be a handy, like-for-like replacement for Nicole Powell, who was recently cut by the Spanish side. Currie averaged 13.3 points and 5.3 rebounds per game with Targoviste.

To fill the void left by the numerous departures, Targoviste have brought in a trio of new faces in the form of Matee Ajavon, Ashley Walker and Jori Davis.

Ajavon previously played in the competition with Fenerbahce where she averaged 14.1 points per game during a brief stint with the Turkish giants. Shooting guard Davis has been a prolific scorer in the Israeli League whilst Walker has shown her firepower in the paint in the Turkish league during recent seasons.

Meanwhile in addition to welcoming Currie, Perfumerias Avenida have further bolstered their roster with the addition of Paola Ferrari, a guard who tore it up last season for Soller Bon Dia before suffering an ACL injury this summer which denied her a proposed move to Girona.

Now back to full fitness, fans at Wurzburg Arena will be hoping she can reproduce the same rich vein of form which saw her pour in over 17 points per game last year in Liga Femenina.
