Torrens Agony Over, Fears For Eldebrink

EUROLEAGUE WOMEN

21. Alba Torrens (Galatasaray)
Finally back in business: Alba Torrens for Galatasaray

Spanish national team ace Alba Torrens made a glorious return to the court after finally coming back from long term injury to pick up a Turkish Cup winners' medal with Galatasaray, but there was contrasting emotion for Swedish star Frida Eldebrink.

The Bourges guard, who is also a candidate for Women's Player of the Year had sustained a wrist injury back in November and opted to rest for a month in a bid to heal the problem, but it doesn't look to have been successful, which means surgery is now likely to be required.

Not only will this prolong her time on the sidelines meaning her EuroLeague Women season is over with Bourges, it could also potentially jeopardise her participation at EuroBasket Women, or at the very least, have a major impact on preparation.

Having averaged 12.6 points per game for her club side, Bourges will certainly miss her, but for Sweden to potentially be without her when they step out in France is almost unthinkable. For the guard poured in a stunning 20.9 points per game last year and was the leading scorer of the summer during EuroBasket Women qualifying.

In stark contrast, there will have been a broad smile on the face of Spanish national team coach and China based Lucas Mondelo when he watched Torrens make a successful return over the weekend.

It's been a long road back for the player who sustained an ACL injury early last year, but Spanish management, players and supporters will all be celebrating having Torrens healthy again.

Indeed fans of women's basketball generally will be thrilled to see one of the worlds' most talented and exciting players back in the limelight and heading for EuroBasket Women - set to be the biggest event of the year.

Torrens managed just over nine minutes in the Turkish Cup Final, although the night was all about her Spanish national team mate and MVP Sancho Lyttle who hit a buzzer-beater to hand Gala a memorable win.
