Bonner Standing Out Already For Rivas

Rivas Ecopolis made some huge signings this summer with Spanish veterans Amaya Valdemoro and Elisa Aguilar among those moving to the Madrid club.

The most important acquisition, though, may have been the player that had such a dramatic impact on Frisco Sika Brno last season in the EuroLeague Women.

The 1.93m guard/forward is DeWanna Bonner.

"She is a step above," Rivas coach Javier Fort said.

"She is a player that can make the difference as she creates danger in all parts of the court."

For Brno last season, Bonner had a career-high 27 in the EuroLeague Women against Rivas on February 5, a contest the Spanish club won in the Czech Republic, 67-64.

It was no wonder they aggressively pursued her in the close-season.

Bonner did a little bit of everything for Rivas at the weekend as they beat Mann Filter Zaragoza in an overtime thriller.

The American finished with 24 points, 11 rebounds and three assists as Rivas won 84-80.

There is a real buzz at Rivas.

Spain's Valdemoro, unlucky not to be voted to the All-Star Five at the FIBA World Championship for Women after leading her team past France and into the Semi-Finals in an overtime classic (Spain won the bronze medal), is receiving as much attention as she ever has since returning home to Madrid.

The 34-year-old has been included on a list of 15 women candidates for the Woman of the Year award that is handed out by the magazine "Mujer Hoy" (Woman Today).

Politicians, actresses, journalists and businesswomen are among the other nominees.
