U20 Women Feature
|Olesia Malashenko does it all on the court for Ukraine|
She might be from Ukraine, but if you look at Olesia Malashenko's playing time every game, she easily qualifies as one of the marathon girls in the U20 European Championship Women in Serbia.
Only three players spend more time on the court than the Power Forward, who currently ranks second in points and third in rebounds per game in the tournament.
We stole 24 seconds of her precious recovery time for this interview.
FIBA Europe: What is your earliest sporting memory?
Olesia: I started playing basketball when I was 13. Nobody played basketball from my family, so I was the first. I can actually remember the first shot I took, I scored. I don't know how I shot it, but I scored and I knew I wanted to play basketball.
FIBA Europe: What do you like to do when you're not playing?
Olesia: Thank god we have the internet! I follow everything that is going on at home, because I've been away so much of the time since I was 16 years old. I read a lot of newspapers, and use it to find out what is going on.
I also watch a lot of videos. I watch things about basketball, and also a lot of movies.
FIBA Europe: Is there one luxury item that you always take with you everywhere you go?
Olesia: I always take photos of my family, everywhere I go. For sure, I always take those.
FIBA Europe: You've just spent a season with Arras, reaching the final of the EuroCup Women. What did you enjoy most about life in France?
Olesia: I enjoyed everything about it, but I suppose I especially liked the weather and the food.
FIBA Europe: Next season, you will be with Chevakata in Russia. That will surely be a huge change?
Olesia: Yes! It will be, and maybe it will be a bit complicated at first. I want to go there to progress as a basketball player with a new coach and a new team. I've not really thought about what I will do there outside of basketball, but I'm sure it will be a good and interesting experience.
FIBA Europe: Of all the places that basketball has taken you, do you have a favourite?
Olesia: I'm not sure. I've enjoyed so many different places, but I particularly like places that are sunny. I say this even thought I've signed for a team in Russia!
