BASKETBALL IN EUROPE

21. Alba Torrens (Galatasaray)

Alba Torrens is bearing down on a return to action with Galatasaray after the FIBA Europe Women's Player of the Year for 2011 was given the green light by doctors in Barcelona to begin more intensive workouts during coming weeks.

Whilst no concrete date has yet been set for the player to step back onto a competitive court, the Spanish Basketball Federation have revealed that sources close to the player believe it could be as soon as the end of the month.

The Spanish ace is one of the biggest names in the women's game, and to see the former EuroLeague Women champion back on the court after spending over ten months side-lined with an ACL injury to her right knee would be a big boost for women's basketball fans everywhere.

Of course it won't only be Galatasaray supporters who will be buoyed by news that she is now able to go one-against-one and two-against-two in practice.

For Torrens will also be welcomed back with open arms by Lucas Mondelo and the Spanish national team, who will be eager to get back to the podium next summer at EuroBasket Women in France - something made much more of an achievable target with Torrens back on board.

Sopron Bring In Amber Holt

Meanwhile UE Sopron have parted ways by mutual consent with forward Hannah Zavecz who has returned to Australia in a bid to rest her troublesome back injury which had restricted her ability to practice, and more or less resigned her to a less than satisfactory, play-only routine.

In order to plug the gap vacated by Zavecz, the club have turned to former favourite Amber Holt who spent three consecutive seasons with the club between 2008 and 2011 - including their memorable run to the Final Four during her very first season.

Holt offered some good production throughout her first spell, and will get to play alongside Jelena Milovanovic again as Sopron look to improve on their record in EuroLeague Women Group B which has harvested a solitary win from the first six games.
