Sopron Take Pivotal Win In Targoviste

Sara Krnjic was the standout player in UE Sopron victory, scoring 11 points alongside seven rebounds

UE Sopron breathed significant life into their hopes of making the play-offs, taking a priceless 65-57 road win at Municipal Targoviste to take the head-to-head against their main rivals in EuroLeague Women Group B.

Both clubs are determined to seal a place in the post-season and having lost 87-82 earlier in the campaign to their opponents, the added bonuses for Sopron aside from the win, was both revenge and bettering the Targoviste winning margin.

In a game when defence reigned supreme, the home side struggled badly in the opening ten minutes of action and failed to even break double-digits, falling 18-9 behind.

Things didn't improve ahead of the interval either with the visitors extending their advantage to 12 points heading into the second half.

Still down by eleven points midway through the third quarter, Targoviste finally found some momentum behind a three-pointer from Gabrielle Marginean and a basket by Claudia Pop which brought them back into contention at 44-38.

It was still a six point margin with less than a minute left on the game clock after a Jillian Robbins jump-shot, but Sopron and specifically Zofia Fegyveneky, kept their composure from the free-throw line to get the job done.

A smart 11 points and seven rebounds from Sara Krnjic stood out for the winning team whilst Serbian national team-mate Jelena Milovanovic top-scored with 15 points.

Young Russian star Ksenia Tikhonenko was the shining light for Targoviste with a near double-double of 11 points and nine rebounds in 20 minutes of action.
