Sparta&K Decisive Winners Over Taranto

Candice Dupree of Sparta&K Moscow Region led all scorers with 14 points and also grabbed six rebounds

Sparta&K Moscow Region dominated at home in a 77-53 romp over CB Taranto on Wednesday.

In a battle with Wisla Can-Pack Krakow for first place in Group C, Sparta&K moved back into pole position after the victory.

They improved to 10-3 with the triumph.

Should Wisla win at Rivas Ecopolis later in the day, and then prevail next week at home against Gospic Croatia, Jose Ignacio Hernandez's side will be assured of top spot since they swept their two games against Sparta&K.

Taranto saw their hopes of progressing to the next stage evaporate with their eighth defeat of the campaign.

The Italians knew it would be difficult in Vidnoje because in the first meeting between the sides, Pokey Chatman's team travelled to Taranto and rolled to a 90-70 victory.

Roberto Ricchini's team put up a good fight for the first quarter, leading 18-16 at the end of the frame.

But Sparta&K then hit them with an 11-0 run at the start of the second quarter and went on to lead 40-24 late in the first half.

The hosts' start to the third quarter put the result beyond doubt.

Baskets by Irina Osipova, Candice Dupree (a three-point play), Becky Hammon and Dupree again stretched the advantage to 49-26.

Dupree's 14 points and Osipova's 13 led Sparta&K, who gave the reigning FIBA Europe Young Women's Player of the Year Nika Baric 20:29 of time on the court.

The Slovenian point guard had five assists to go with her three points.

Sonja Petrovic, a former FIBA Europe Young Women's Player of the Year, had nine points and six boards for Sparta&K.

Taranto, who upset Wisla in their game last week, endured an almighty struggle shooting the ball, making just 17 of 58 (29.3%) of their attempts from the floor.
