|Anna Cruz and Rivas Ecopolis face a very late Wednesday, or some might say very early Thursday tip-off.|
For the past two decades, midnight basketball has been played in inner-city neighbourhoods across North America and the United Kingdom. Now Madrid in Spain is also set to host its own version of midnight ball.
In an effort to curb inner-city crime and to help keep youth and young men off the streets, midnight basketball was introduced to cities throughout the United States in the late eighties and early nineties.
Now however, midnight basketball will be played in Madrid on Wednesday night for completely different reasons when Rivas Ecopolis take on Uni Gyor in EuroLeague Women action.
Due to nationwide strikes planned across Spain, Portugal and Greece on Wednesday, fears of disruptions to the game have led to both teams agreeing to wait until the stroke of midnight has passed, with tip-off now scheduled for 12:30am in the small hours of Thursday morning.
It is an important game for both teams, who come into the encounter with one loss to their names, although the Hungarian visitors have played an extra game.
