USO Mondeville finally shrugged off pesky Group C basement dwellers Novi Zagreb to earn a valuable 79-74 home court win but will have to win at USK Prague to guarantee making it to the post season.
The expected celebrations were ruined when news filtered through from the later game between Perfumerias Avenida and UMMC Ekaterinburg confirming Avenida had claimed a famous shock victory.
Mondeville put their supporters through every emotion against an opponent with just one victory to their name, and without Croatian national team star and former Eurobasket Women All-Tournament Team occupant Sandra Mandir.
Yet despite the guard no longer in the line-up and rumoured to be on her way to play in the Turkish League with Istanbul University, Novi Zagreb put on an encouraging performance which had their hosts wondering if they might slip up.
The alarm bells first began to ring when Mondeville fell 28-21 behind, although by the midway point of the game, they had leveled matters at 38.
Whilst they then took the initiative after the break to move 47-42 ahead, they suddenly lost their way in worrying fashion.
The visitors rattled off an excellent 11-2 run as Latoya Williams converted from distance to give Novi Zagreb the lead and set up a thrilling finale.
Still leading 69-66, it looked like the Croatians might double their win tally for the season, but when it mattered most, Mondeville stepped things up to win the game down the stretch with a 13-5 finish to the game.
Novi Zagreb will point to 23 turnovers as one major reason for their defeat, although Williams can be proud of a double-double of 19 points and 11 rebounds.
Laetitia Kamba stood out for Mondeville with 14 points, eight rebounds and four assists.
