Brunson Switch From Taranto To Ros Casares

04.05.2010

Ros Casares are letting everyone know that the EuroLeague Women title that eluded them this season will again be the team's aim for the 2010-11 campaign after announcing the signing of EuroLeague Women All-Star Rebekkah Brunson.

The 1.91m center is the second major signing in as many days, with Ros announcing on Monday the addition of Spain international Nuria Martinez to the squad.

Brunson has been one of the top players in Europe the past two years, helping Cras Basket Taranto reach the 2009 EuroCup Women Final in 2009.

This year, the American averaged 15.7 points and 8.3 rebounds in the EuroLeague Women.

Ros Casares, who lost to Spartak Moscow Region in this year's Final, know what they are getting with the 28-year-old Brunson because they faced her twice in the Qualifying Round.

She had 23 points and 12 rebounds to lead Taranto to a 78-69 upset of Ros in the first meeting in Italy and in the second game in Valencia, she finished with 12 points and eight rebounds.

The Spaniards won that game, 87-59.

"Brunson is a very powerful and athletic player that improves the physical quality of any team," said Ros Casares general manager Carme Lluveras, who also watched Brunson play at the EuroLeague Women All-Star Game in Gdynia earlier this year.

"She dominates in rebounds and can be a strong scorer in the paint."

Brunson ranks as the all-time leading rebounder at Georgetown University.

The departure of Brunson is a blow to Taranto, who lost two tight games to Fenerbahce in the Eighth-Finals of the EuroLeague Women this season.

Ros Casares, meanwhile, have a lot of big announcements in the pipeline and none will be more important than the name of their next coach.

Laszlo Ratgeber, the former Spartak Moscow Region coach, has been linked with the club though Fenerbahce are also thought to be leading in the chase for his signature.

One of the hottest coaches in Europe, George Dikeoulakos of this year's EuroCup Women winners, Sony Athinaikos, will be sure to draw attention from EuroLeague Women outfits.

Dikeoulakos will coach Latvia as they attempt to qualify for the EuroBasket Women.
