BASKETBALL IN EUROPE
|Croatian center Marija Vrsaljko is ready for the biggest challenge in her still young career|
Marija Vrsaljko is moving into uncharted waters after signing for Perfumerias Avenida.
The 22-year-old Croatia international, a 1.95m center, has decided to end her four-year stay at Gospic Croatia and play for a club that is synonymous with success in both Spain and the EuroLeague Women.
The fans of the Salamanca club are among the most devoted in the world.
"I am very happy and very excited to have signed for Salamanca and above all, to be going on my first adventure away from Croatia," she said.
"I am very happy to go and play there.
"I chose Perfumerias Avenida because I love everything that I have seen and heard about it.
"They have told me that the atmosphere in the (Wurzburg) arena is spectacular with lots of fans and that Salamanca is a beautiful city.
"I believe that I am going to be very happy playing there."
Avenida no doubt believe they have uncovered a diamond in the rough, one that is going to sparkle in both Spain and the EuroLeague Women.
In 14 EuroLeague Women games for Gospic this season, Vrsaljko averaged 11.9 points and 7.1 rebounds in 25.1 minutes per game.
Vrsaljko, who was speaking to La Gaceta de Salamanca, said: "I believe I will be able to contribute a lot to the team with my play.
"I am young and I want to try to prove to myself that I can do my best and help the team."
Vrsaljko has been hearing a lot of praise about her ability and her potential for future greatness since Avenida, the team that won the EuroLeague Women and Spanish league in 2011 and the Copa de la Reina (Spanish cup) earlier this year, offered her a contract.
"It's a great compliment that they say that and also great motivation," she said.
"Perfumerias Avenida is a great opportunity for me and I want to play as well as I can.
"I have played four seasons at Gospic and I feel that the time has come to try a new experience.
"Gospic is a great team in Croatia and it was fantastic to play there but now I am preparing to face new challenges and I am able to say that I am ready and happy to be able to play for one of the great teams."
