GAME REPORT

Le Mans Rally For Victory

21. Michal Ignerski (Le Mans)
Michal Ignerski led all scorers with 18 points

A huge late rally lifted Le Mans to a 72-66 win over Antwerp Giants in their Group G opener in the EuroChallenge.

Le Mans overturned a nine-point deficit inside the final five minutes as the Giants scored just three points down the stretch.

It was the final twist in an up and down game, which saw Le Mans outscore the Giants 21-7 in the second quarter, only to lose the third 21-6.

It seemed the Giants were on course for victory when Brandon Ubel's jump-shot made it 63-54 with 4:26 left on the clock.

But Michal Ignerski and Shyron Ely ignited Le Mans with back-to-back three-pointers, the start of 16 unanswered points that made it 70-63 with only 24 seconds left.

Kyle Fogg tried to get the Giants back into with a three of his own with 17 ticks to go.

The Giants began to foul, but Daniel Ewing missed the second of his free throws to allow Ignerski to grab the rebound, and they took vital seconds off the clock.

Ignerski then split another pair of free throws six ticks from time, and the clock ran out on the Giants.

Ignerski led Le Mans with 18 points while Ely had 13.

Fogg had 13 to lead the Giants.

COACH QUOTES

Quotes: Le Mans vs. Antwerp Giants

Paul Vervaeck, Antwerp Giants Head Coach
"We missed a chance to win the game tonight when we were 9 points up and there were 4 minutes to play but in the end we lost by 6 points. I am not happy to lose but happy by the fighting spirit of the team, which came back in the 3rd quarter and even controlled the game all of the 3rd quarter. Too many offensive boards missed tonight and Le Mans was an aggressive team. Le Mans is still the favorite of the group. Unfortunately, Le Mans got their momentum in the last 4 minutes of the match especially with Ignerski."

Jean-Marc Mwema, Antwerp Giants
"We must always win a game when we are 9 points up at 4:15 to the end of the match. Le Mans was not better than us tonight but we lost by lack of maturity. It is a big frustration because the pressure was on Le Mans. We were missing maturity in the key periods both at the end of the first half and at the end of the match."

Erman Kunter, Le Mans Head Coach
"Very hard game for the nerves. We tried several options in defence especially in the 3rd quarter but without success. We thought it would have been easier to win tonight. In EuroChallenge, it is very much important to win at home. We won although it was not well engaged. We should have the possibility to win in Belgium if we are playing a serious and good game. We suffered a lot in the paint and we did not play as expected. Rodrigue Beaubois is not yet ready to play, and his return was delayed this morning by the medical staff. It is not good news because we need him as an impact player."

Michal Ignerski, Le Mans
"It was a hard game with ups and downs. We struggled in defence as well as in offence quite a long period. It was not a good game at home but we won and it is what is important tonight."
