GAME REPORT

Mons Finish Strong For Road Win

11. Jamie Billie (Mons-Hainaut)
Jamie Billie led Mons-Hainaut with 20 points

Mons-Hainaut finished on a late charge to open their EuroChallenge Group E campaign with a 79-69 victory over Lisboa Benfica on the road.

Having built a healthy lead in the third period, the Belgian team saw Benfica close to within three points early in the fourth before pulling out a double-digit lead that sank their hosts.

Jamie Billie led the way with 20 points while Austin Nichols added 14 and Justin Cage 12.

A tight first half saw 10 lead changes as the teams traded blows, but after Benfica scored the opening five points of the second half they had opened up a 44-36 lead.

Mons-Hainaut immediately wiped that out with a 10-0 charge featuring three-pointers from Nichols and Cage.

Once in front, the visitors never trailed again, beginning to build some separation, leading 59-50 when Michael Smith sank a jump-shot late in the third quarter.

Benfica were still in reach, 66-63 down, after Ron Slay's lay-up with 6:32 to go, but Mons-Hainaut responded with a 10-2 run to lead 76-65 after Billie's free throw with 72 seconds to go.

Jobey Thomas led Benfica with 17 points and 11 assists.

COACH QUOTES

Quotes: Lisboa Benfica vs. Mons-Hainaut

Jason Love, Belfius
"Benfica played well in the first half. The coach called for our attention in the timeouts and told us that if we wanted to win the game, we would have to stop Benfica's triples, and this was what we did in the second half."

Jobey Thomas, Benfica
"They improved in the second half. I'm not sure if it was because they stopped our triples or because they have a better bench. We were tired and they have good shooters."

Yves Defraigne, Belfius Head Coach
"It was a tough game. Benfica is a really tough team, they're very good. They made several outside shots and can be dangerous if we let them play. We improved in the second half defensively. The secret to winning this game was to stop Benfica's outside shooting. We'll try to qualify to the next round in the EuroChallenge, this is our season's goal."

Carlos Lisboa Benfica Head Coach
"I think that, throughout the game, we weren't strong on defensive rebounding. We allowed a lot of second chances to the Belgian team, and some of them got in. We had a good prospect for the win when we eight points clear, but we couldn't extend the lead. They deserve credit because they're a good team.

"I don't like losing. We played hard, but there are no moral victories in Benfica. We missed some easy shots. I want to stress the atmosphere in the Pavilion, with people who love basketball, in our return to Europe."
