GAME REPORT

Den Bosch Break Brindisi Hearts

12. Kees Akerboom (SPM Shoeters Den Bosch)
Kees Akerboom and his team SPM Shoeters Den Bosch started the EuroChallenge with a win

Enel Basket Brindisi's fourth-quarter rally fell agonisingly short in Group A of the EuroChallenge as SPM Shoeters Den Bosch snatched a 71-69 win at the death.

Enel came from 14 points down in the final five minutes to tie it up, but after Den Bosch nosed back in front with six seconds left, the visitors saw a late three-point effort miss and tasted defeat.

Such an outcome had seemed a foregone conclusion for much of the game.

Den Bosch established control early, leading 16-4 after a pair of free throws from Reginald Johnson midway through the first quarter, while Stefan Wessels' lay-up made it 40-19 before half-time.

Brindisi steadily chipped away in the third quarter, but although they got the deficit back to single figures, 53-49, late in the third, Den Bosch soon pulled clear and the danger appeared over.

But with the score 65-48, Enel began an astonishing 21-4 run, highlighted by three-pointers from Delroy James and Elston Turner, to tie the game on a James lay-up with 63 seconds left.

James then missed a three after a Den Bosch turnover, allowing Kees Akerboom to restore the hosts lead with a jump-shot six seconds from time.

Marcus Denmon hoisted a three on the buzzer, but it bounced clear and Den Bosch had escaped.
Johnson scored 23 to lead Den Bosch, with Turner collecting 17 for the visitors.

COACH QUOTES

Quotes: SPM Shoeters vs. Enel Basket

Piero Bucchi, Brindisi Head Coach
"We played a very bad first half. In the second half our mentality was much better. It is difficult to win a game on the road in Europe, it is not bad to lose a game on the last shot. That's not a bad result."

Elston Howard Turner, Brindisi
"We have to start better. They took the lead with 15, 20 points in the first half. You can't start a game like that. We had a great comeback, but we have to start better."

Sam Jones, SPM Shoeters Head Coach
"We controlled the first half pretty much. We controlled the first 3 quarters. We knew they would come back and they did. I'm proud of my players and we kept strong. We knew we would play against quality basketball teams. We broke down the last minutes. The offensive rebounds killed us the entire night. I'm glad we took the win, but I didn't like the way we finished the game."

Reggie Johnson, SPM Shoeters
"It was a great atmosphere here, the supporters were amazing. The fans helped us out a lot this game. We watched a lot of games of Brindisi and we knew they were good. We have to take our head off for their resilience."
