BASKETBALL IN EUROPE

These are busy days for two of the clubs that will embark on their maiden campaign in the EuroChallenge this year, Turkish side Royal Hali Gaziantep and Dutch team GasTerra Flames Groningen.

The Turkish BEKO Ligi tips off next weekend but Gaziantep played their first official game of the season on Monday, in Group A of the First Round of the Turkish Spor Toto Cup.

Gaziantep fell 75-72 to last season's EuroChallenge finalists, Pinar Karsiyaka, despite a double-double performance by Oliver Stevic, who collected 16 points and 13 rebounds, and 14 points from Serkan Erdoğan.

Karsiyaka's Mutlu Demir led his team with 13 points while point guard Bobby Dixon collected 10 points, five rebounds and five assists.

Gaziantep will play against Trabzonspor on Tuesday and will go up against Banvit on Wednesday, in their two remaining fixtures in the Group.

The Turkish club were drawn in Group B of the EuroChallenge Regular Season, together with reigning champions Krasnye Krylia Samara, Hungarian side Atomerömü SE and the Romanians of CSM Oradea.

GasTerra Flames Groningen meanwhile, who were drawn in Group E of the EuroChallenge Regular Season, had to make an early adjustment to their roster after just one game in the new season.

Groningen will most likely miss Daniel Coleman in their Group E opener against Okapi Aalstar on 12 November, as the American forward picked up a knee injury and is expected to be sidelined for approximately two months.

Coleman, who played in eight games in the EuroChallenge last season and averaged 11.3 points and 6.1 rebounds for Finnish club, Joensuun Kataja, has been replaced temporarily on the team by his compatriot Jeff Robinson.

The 25-year-old American suited up for AZS Koszalin last season and averaged 13.4 points, on 53% two-point shooting, and 5.7 rebounds in 17 games in the Polish Tauron Liga.

Robinson had previously played for Furstenfeld and averaged 15.5 points and 6.4 rebounds per game in the Austrian Bundesliga.

Groningen have played one official game so far this season, losing 69-63 to fellow EuroChallenge side Zorg en Zekerheid Leiden in the Dutch Basketball League opener at the weekend.
