BASKETBALL IN EUROPE

The 2013/14 season is over in a rather unceremonious way for EuroChallenge finalists Triumph Lyubertsy, who played their last game on Wednesday night.

Triumph lost 97-87 to Lietuvos Rytas at home in Game 3 of their VTB United League quarter-final match-up and also lost the play-off series, 3-0.

Kyle Landry had 22 points and six rebounds for Triumph in defeat, while the Lithuanian side were led by Juan Palacios, who had 22 points and Stevan Jelovac, who picked up 20 points.

Triumph missed their big chance in Game 2 of the series in Vilnius, when they took control of the encounter right from tip-off and led their hosts by as many as 13 points in the third quarter.

Rytas however came back late in the fourth to tie the scores at the end of regulation and ultimately snatched a 96-94 win in overtime, over a shell-shocked Triumph side.

"To sum up our year, I'd say that we had a terrific season," Triumph head coach Vasily Karasev said.

"We took third place in the [VTB League Group B] regular season, trailing only Khimki and CSKA.

"We were runners-up in the EuroChallenge and earned a direct berth in the Eurocup next season.

"When we look back on a shaky start to the season, I'm happy that we managed to find our game and demonstrate excellent results."

Lietuvos Rytas will now go on into the play-off semi-finals against Nizhny Novgorod, who stunned hot favourites Khimki 3-0 in the quarter-final series between the two Russian sides.
