BASKETBALL IN EUROPE

EuroChallenge side Cholet Basket have extended their unbeaten streak in the French Pro A new season to four games, as they secured an 81-75 win on the road against Strasbourg on Monday night.

Cholet had already delivered their credentials as a force to be reckoned with this year during the first three weeks of competition in France.

None the less, the Monday victory over Strasbourg strengthens their case significantly, as the team coached by EuroBasket-winning coach Vincent Collet are last year's league runners up and a Turkish Airlines Euroleague competitor.

Cholet jumped into the driver's seat and led by eight points at the end of the first quarter, but Strasbourg's supremacy on the glass (they out-rebounded Cholet 39-27) enabled them to reduce the gap to just one point, 38-37, at the half-time break.

Jean-Manuel Sousa's team however pulled away in the third and extended their cushion to 10 points, a deficit from which Strasbourg could not recover in the final frame.

Cholet's victory is largely the result of another stellar display by the trio of players that has led the way for this team in every game during the opening stretch of the season.

John Cox, Lamayn Wilson and Terrell Stoglin combined for 62 of Cholet's 81 points, with Wilson grabbing a team-high six rebounds and Stoglin dishing out a team-high five assists.

French international Alexis Ajinca finished with 22 points and nine rebounds for Strasbourg in a losing effort.

"It's a very beautiful win for us," Wilson told French TV channel Sport+ afterwards.

"Let's not forget that Strasbourg is still a Euroleague team.

"We played together like a team, and as for me, I was lucky and my shots went in."

Cholet are now tied with Orleans at 4-0 in the standings and on Saturday night they are facing their biggest test so far this season.

Just three days before their EuroChallenge opener, they are playing host to reigning French champions and current league leaders Nanterre, the third outfit to still march unbeaten in the Pro A this season.

Cholet were drawn in Group G in the EuroChallenge Regular Season, together with Zorg En Zekerheid Leiden, Bakken Bears Aarhus and Kataja Basket.

8. Ivan Jelenic (BC Timisoara)
Mures' latest signing Ivan Jelenic brings EuroChallenge experience to the table, as he suited up for Timisoara last season

MURES ADD JELENIC

BC Mures, the Romanian club who will make their debut in a European competition in this year's EuroChallenge, have bolstered their backcourt by signing combo guard Ivan Jelenic.

The 28-year-old Montenegrin, who started the season at Mornar Bar, has experience of both the Romanian LNB league and the EuroChallenge, as he suited up last year for fellow Romanian side BC Timisoara.

In the 16 LNB games he played for Timisoara he averaged 9.9 points, 1.4 rebounds and 1.3 assists per game, while in the EuroChallenge Regular Season he averaged 7.5 points and 2.2 assists per encounter.

Jelenic joined his new team-mates immediately but could not prevent Mures's 88-74 loss to CSU Asesoft Ploiesti, their third in five games in the LNB this season.

Mures were penalised by their lack of depth, as only six of their players stayed on the floor for more than six minutes and Ploiesti started pulling away in the third quarter.

Goran Martinic had 25 points and five assists and Aleksandar Mladenovic added 19 points and nine rebounds for Mures in losing efforts.

Jelenic failed to get his name on the score-sheet and only contributed two assists in defeat.

The Romanians were drawn in Group H in the EuroChallenge Regular Season and will do battle with Rilski Sportist, Szolnoki Olaj and Tsmoki Minsk.
