EUROCHALLENGE

Red and white were the dominant colours in PalaDozza, as Reggio Emilia and their fans celebrated the club's first major title

The word "history" was prominent in Italian media on Monday morning in summing up Grissin Bon Reggio Emilia's EuroChallenge Final Four victory at their first attempt.

Host team Reggio Emilia defeated Triumph Lyubertsy 79-65 in Sunday's final in the famous PalaDozza in Bologna, marking the first trophy for the club beyond what they have won in the Italian second division.

"Triumph at PalaDozza where Grissin Bon Reggio Emilia celebrates its first historical trophy in a crowded red and white PalaDozza," announced La Gazzetta dello Sport, whilst it was a similar path walked by La Repubblica who wrote, "historical triumph for Grissin Bon Reggio Emilia in the EuroChallenge." Il Corriere dello Sport followed suit, pointing out it is the first trophy for the club at elite level.

The Italian Federation website looked at the bigger picture, drawing attention to the fact that this is the first trophy won by an Italian team at European level for five years, the previous being Virtus Bologna, who also won the EuroChallenge, in 2009.

The reports also paid tribute to the approximate 4,500 fans who made the 40-minute journey north-west to Bologna for the final with www.legabasket.it writing, "Almost 5000 "reggiani" (4879 to be precise) witnessed the triumph of Grissin Bon."

The victory was also making headlines in Lithuania and Latvia, thanks to the contributions of their countrymen, Rimantas Kaukenas and Ojars Silins respectively, in helping claim the trophy.

Leading Latvian sports website www.sportacentrs.lv heralded the fact that Silins is the first Latvian male to win a trophy at European level since the triumph of Barons/LMT in the EuroChallenge in 2008.
