GasTerra Flames Groningen enjoyed a big 85-60 win over Reggio Emilia as the form book went out of the window in the final night of action in Group E of the EuroChallenge.
With the Italian side top of the group before the game with a 4-1 record and Groningen rock bottom at 1-4 this result was hardly on the cards but Reggio Emilia's focus on more immediate priorities with progression secured was clear.
Groningen were not going to complain as they took full advantage.
Reggio Emilia started strongly enough as they led 21-8 on Troy Bell's lay-up with 3:17 to go in the first quarter.
But Groningen replied with a 12-2 run and the momentum was almost entirely with them for the rest of the game.
Thomas Koenis levelled it from the free-throw line before Jason Dourisseau's three-pointer put them on top 30-27 and another three from Arvin Slagter made it 40-32 before half-time.
The lead only grew in the second half and an incredible fourth quarter saw the hosts outscore the group leaders 22-5.
Jeffrey Robinson led Groningen with 20 points while Dourisseau added 13, Daniel Coleman 12 and Koenis 11.
Bell led Reggio Emilia with 17 points while Andrea Cinciarini added 11.
