Rares Mandache was one of five Gaz Metan Medias players to score in double figures
Gaz Metan Medias dampened the return of BC Kyiv to the EuroChallenge on Tuesday evening, winning 83-74 on the road to open their 2013/14 account.
Holding a slight two-point advantage at the half on the back of 10 first-half points from Rares Mandache, the 2013 Last 16 participants broke away in the third quarter, outscoring their hosts 26-16 thanks to six quick-fire points from veteran Slavisa Bogavac late in the piece.
Bogavac went on to complete the night with 11 points and Mandache had 13 - five behind his team's leading scorer Willie Kemp.
The off-season American signing impressed in his first EuroChallenge outing, complementing his 18 points with seven assists.
Another notable performance came from Georgios Tsiaras with an all-round display which procured 13 points, eight rebounds and six assists.
Down by 12 points (59-47) entering the final 10 minutes, Vyacheslav Bobrov, had the hosts back within 10 on the opening play of the frame, and indeed the lead was cut back to single digits moments later on a Maksym Sandul fast-break.
However, Medias assured that the points continued to tick over to retain control of the game and wrap up the nine-point victory.
Bobrov finished the night with 13 points whilst Vladyslav Podolyan paced the home side with 18.
