GAME REPORT

Tartu Bow Out On A High Note

8. Janar Talts (Tartu Rock)
Janar Talts led the way for Tartu with a game-high 21 points

Tartu University Rock prevailed 71-64 over SPM Shoeters Den Bosch at home on Tuesday and concluded their EuroChallenge campaign in third place in Last 16 Group K, ahead of their Dutch rivals.

Neither Tartu nor Den Bosch had any chance of advancing to the Quarter-Final Play-Offs going into the encounter, but none the less they offered an entertaining and very close game to the Estonian fans in attendance.

Tartu decided to make some headway late in the third quarter, as neither team had led by more than five points until that stage.

A lay-up by Saimon Sutt 40 seconds from the end of the third period sparked a 10-0 run for the hosts, which Tanel Sokk capped off with a three-pointer 8:16 from the final buzzer, to make it 58-44 for Tartu.

Whatever thoughts of a reaction by Den Bosch were put to rest by Tanel Kurbas, who poured in seven consecutive points within 67 seconds before Sokk took a trip to the charity stripe and gave Tartu their biggest lead of the night, 66-47, with just five minutes remaining to play.

Veteran big man Janar Talts led Tartu with 21 points and overtook William Thomas for fourth place on the EuroChallenge all-time scorers' list, while Kurbas and Joosep Toome finished with 10 points apiece.

Ralf De Pagter, who had 10 points, was the only Den Bosch player to score in double digits.

COACH QUOTES

Quotes: Tartu University Rock vs. SPM Shoeters Den Bosch

Sam Jones, SPM Shoeters Head Coach
"We started out well defensively and limited them to just 32 points in the first half. But in the third quarter they made a 22-12 run which put the game away. They broke our hearts with three pointers and we missed defensive assignments and could not respond well in that period. We came here to win and try to improve our team chemistry and production."

Kees Akerboom, SPM Shoeters
"We tried some different defence and last time we played them we had a rough start. But today our start was better and we were leading at half-time. In the second half we made a lot of mistakes in a short period and they answered with fast-break layups and the difference was suddenly 15 points. We always keep fighting, but we have to be smarter and not put ourselves in that position."

Gert Kullamäe, Tartu Rock Head Coach
"We had some tasks with today's game: we wanted to win the game, try and test some players together on the court and have younger guys play more minutes. I think we fulfilled those tasks and made our nation's holiday even more festive in front of our home crowd. But now this competition is over for us and we are getting ready for the Baltic League play-off games."

Saimon Sutt, Tartu Rock
"I think it was a good game for us. We won the game and personally for me it was a good game - the most minutes I have played in this league this season and my numbers were ok."
