GAME REPORT

Late Run Puts Tartu On Top

Timo Eichfuss (Tartu Rock)
Timo Eichfuss top-scored for Tartu with 18 points

Tartu Rock scored the final 11 points of the game to top Energia TG-Jiu 66-59 and move to the top of Group B of the EuroChallenge.

After Körmend lost to Lukoil Academic, Tartu are out in front with a 3-1 record, but they needed a late push to do it.

In a close game where neither side led by more than seven all night, the visitors held a four-point edge when Giordan Watson made a jump-shot with 2:12 left on the clock.

But they would prove to be the final points of the night for Energia as Tartu snatched the game away.

Back-to-back three-pointers from Timo Eichfuss and Tanel Kurbas powered them into the lead, and the wheels came off for Energia as they sought a response, with Nemanja Milosevic missing a lay-up before being called for an offensive foul.

After Tanel Sokk sank a couple of free throws for Tartu, Porter Troupe missed a three-pointer for the visitors.

They got something of a let-off when Kurbas missed two free throws to keep the gap at four with 11 seconds left, but Milosevic was called for a technical foul which proved the final nail in their coffin, with Valmo Kriisa and Kurbas icing it from the line.

Eichfuss led Tartu to victory with 18 points and eight rebounds.

Milosevic had 18 points and Watson 17 in vain for Energia.

COACH QUOTES

Quotes: Tartu Rock vs. Energia

Antonis Constantinides, Head Coach Energia
"First of all congratulations to Tartu for winning. It was an interesting game. Maybe not so much quality, because the difference was below three-points. Our goal today was to play good defence and keep the score low. We made it happen - it is not easy to keep Tartu at their home on 66 points. But we didn't work good offensively. I feel both teams deserved the win today, Tartu had better options in the end. Nothing is finished in the group and everybody still has a chance to qualify for the next round. I believe we are one of the two teams to get to the next round, because we have played good games. The one good thing about today is that we didn't lose by more than we won the game at home."

Tal Karpelesz, Energia
"For 38 minutes we controlled the game, but lost our concentration in the last few minutes. I hope next game we will be focused for 40 minutes. We really want to qualify for the next round, because I think we deserve it."

Marek Doronin, Tartu Rock
"In the beginning we tried too much to play a team game - we overpassed and let some open shots pass. In the second half we started shooting and made the shots. It is not our game not to shoot and we rely pretty much on three pointers. In the end it worked and we got the win."

Gert Kullamäe, Head Coach Tartu Rock
"In the first half we were too tense and did not want to take respoonsibility and overplayed the situations a lot. Both teams had made their homework and didn't surprise too much. If we play at home we cannot pass up shots. Fortunately in the second half we started taking more shots and it was successful. Both teams knew that this may be a key game and therefore it was not a very open game. In the end, a very good and important win for us."
