GAME REPORT

Late Show Lifts Energia

8. Louis Darby (Energia)
Louis Darby chipped in with 16 points for Energia

Energia Targu-Jiu blew Tartu University Rock away in the fourth quarter to claim a 74-56 win in their Group B opener in the EuroChallenge.

Energie outscored the visitors 28-9 in the final 10 minutes to turn a close contest into something of a rout.

Tartu's reliance on the three-pointer came back to haunt them as they made only three-of-18 (16.7%) from beyond the arc, and paid the price.

Energia led almost throughout, but the advantage was rarely out of double figures until the final period as Tartu scrapped to stay in the game.

Energia quickly took a double-digit lead with Porter Troupe's three making it 13-2 midway through the first quarter, but Tartu scored the next seven and continued to keep it close.

They could not get on level terms until the end of the third period, when Timo Eichfuss' three nosed them in front, 47-46 with 33 seconds left in the period.

But Energia's response in the fourth was swift and brutal as they reeled off a 13-2 run to go 59-49 up.

That was just the beginning and the lead was 72-53 after back-to-back lay-ups from Nemanja Milosevic with 67 seconds left.

Giordan Watson led Energia with 19 points while Louis Darby had 16.

Eichfuss had 17 for Tartu, but Valmo Kriisa was held to just three as he made 1-of-6 from deep to highlight their three-point shooting woes.

COACH QUOTES

Quotes: Energia vs. Tartu Rock

Giordan Watson, Energia TG - JIU
"I think we started good, and they did a couple of things to slow us down but I think with our defence and the way coach want us to play defence, even if we struggle offensively, we are going to give ourselves a chance to always stay in the game. We must play defence and then figure out what's going wrong in the offence."

Antonis Constantinides, Energia TG-JIU Head Coach

"I am very happy and very happy for my players, for the committee, for the people who come to the game because nobody imagined at the start of our first games in Europe, that the first game will be like this. For me it's not surprising because I am every day with these players, I watch them every day and saw how confident they were before this game, how much they wanted to win this game and that's why we got this result. It was not a surprise, the best team won today."

Gert Kullamae, Tartu Rock Head Coach
"Congratulations for our opponents and they really deserved this win today, especially due the last quarter, where they played excellent defence against us. I think we played a good game for 30 minutes, we were aggressive against this team, but right now they have more power than we have. We have a lot of problems now, with our players, some guys are injured, some guys just got back from injuries, so it's really difficult. The last quarter was the key quarter, and they had more power, more energy and like I said they really deserved this win."

Timo Eichfuss, Tartu Rock
"It was a really hard game, they put a lot of pressure on us the entire game, especially their point guard and their small guys. We committed a lot of easy turnovers, forced turnovers, and in the last quarter we lost by almost 20."
