GAME REPORT

Talts, Kriisa Get Tartu Off The Mark

7. Valmo Kriisa (Tartu Rock)
Valmo Kriisa continues to defy age, scoring a joint team-high 19 points

Tartu University Rock dominated the middle stretch of the game to take a 71-59 victory over Lukoil Academic Sofia and record their first win in Group B of the EuroChallenge.

Tartu outscored the visitors 36-19 over the middle two quarters, and that was all they needed to drop Academic to 0-2.

Valmo Kriisa and Janar Talts each scored 19 points to lead Tartu, while Talts' seven rebounds on the night left him one short of the 500 mark in EuroChallenge competition.

Tanel Kurbas had another night short of his own high standards, but still chipped in with six points, four rebounds and five assists.

Tartu began to take control of the game at the start of the second quarter with an 8-0 burst that made it 23-13 when Kriisa sank three free throws from the line.

Talts' dunk began a 9-2 burst that had them 44-29 up on Kurbas' three with 3:01 to go in the third, and the lead hit 19 as Karolis Petrukonis picked up the pieces from Kriisa's missed three to make it 51-32 at the end of the period.

Kriisa's lay-up made it 56-34 early in the fourth before Academic tried to rally, closing the gap to 62-50 on Charles Thomas' free throws with 3:29 to go.

However, they could not get the game back into single figures as Tartu saw out the win.

Terry Smith had 15 points for Academic with Thomas scoring 14 and Sharaud Curry 13.

COACH QUOTES

Quotes: Tartu University Rock vs. PBC Lukoil Academic Sofia

Jovica Arsic, Lukoil Academic Head Coach
"We had problems from the start. When we were down by 10 my players started to get nervous and we didn't play as a team. We didn't share the ball enough and finished the game with three assists - that is not our way of playing the game. We have some not so experienced players and to play in this atmosphere was new for them. Congratulations to Tartu Rock and their fans."

Kris Minkov, Lukoil Academic
"We prepared well for the game, but I guess we were a little bit nervous and didn't play good defence and I guess this was the reason we lost. I think Janar Talts was the biggest problem for us, but also Valmo Kriisa played well, he is very experienced and still moving well."

Gert Kullamäe, Tartu Rock Head Coach
"Of course it was a good win for us and it was emotionally really important for us. But it came with a price - one of our point guards hurt his leg again and we don't know how long he is going to be out. Our defence worked well and the team fought really well. Although in the end they came back a bit, but overall it was an important win for us."

Karolis Petrukonis, Tartu Rock
"I personally have not played the last games as well as I can, but today we really delivered as a team and I'm really happy with the win."

Janar Talts, Tartu Rock
"It was really important to win the home game. The fact that they came back in the end is a bit worrying, but today our trump was defence and that we held their game to a low score."
