"I have been fortunate to play in two great teams, the Spanish national team and with Galatasaray" - Alba Torrens

Alba Torrens is thrilled with her second FIBA Europe Women's Player of the Year award and has received plaudits from Spanish Federation President, Jose Luis Saez and national team coach, Lucas Mondelo.

The 25-year-old took time out from preparing for her forthcoming EuroLeague Women game with UMMC Ekaterinburg to express her gratitude and underline how her accolade is another ringing endorsement for Spanish women's basketball.

Not only has Torrens taken over the prestigious gong from Spain team-mate Sancho Lyttle, but it also completed another awards double for her nation - with Angela Salvadores having taken the baton from Astou Ndour in the Young Women's version.

"I think Spanish Basketball is doing a great job," Torrens told fibaeurope.com.

"Not only with the senior teams, but starting with all the various youth competitions too.

"We are now getting great results in all competitions.

"It is an honour to receive this award and I want to say thank you to FIBA Europe, the fans and also, the many companions with whom I have enjoyed working with during 2014 - including the coaches and staff, who have helped me to live an unforgettable year.

"I think the individuals awards, are team awards too.

"I have been fortunate to play in two great teams, the Spanish national team and with Galatasaray."

She continued, "It is now time to keep working hard to try to reach our goals this year with both Ekaterinburg and the national team.

"The only way to address these challenges is with humility and work."

Spanish Federation President José Luis Saez paid tribute to Torrens and also reflected on another two awards for his nation.

He said, "Alba is an example of commitment and improvement, and we all have to feel very proud that she has been awarded this prize, because she truly deserves it.

"She's a player who has done the work and sacrifice - she is a real example of a professional athlete.

"It's also impossible not to remember the months when she was off the court with a serious injury.

"It is further international recognition of the work that is being done in Spanish basketball from all walks of life and heading towards the FIBA Women's World Cup in 2018, we are in the best possible shape," concluded Saez.

Meanwhile national team head coach Lucas Mondelo paid tribute to his star player and to her genius on the court.

He said,"I can tell you that I have the feeling that Alba is a player that is always learning and you are always surprised by her.

"She makes you feel love for basketball, she's a different and unique player who plays with all of the possibilities.

"When she is happy, she makes other people happy."
