| Sofia Pinheiro had 16 points in a famous Portugal victory|
There was history at the U18 European Championship Women in Vinkovci as Portugal managed to successfully defend their newfound position in Division A by inflicting a stomach-wrenching 73-66 defeat on their Croatian hosts.
Portugal will get to play back-to-back tournaments at the top level for the first time in their history after accomplishing consecutive overtime wins.
This latest thrilling victory was a real choker for Croatia who will now have to fight to avoid the added disappointment of being relegated to Division B on home soil.
They will be kicking themselves for allowing a significant seven-point lead with two minutes of regulation remaining to evaporate.
In fact, having led 60-53, they even fell behind with 22 seconds to go, but Inja Butina grabbed a basket to help force the extra period.
Butina was inspirational and hit 30 points, the highest score in the tournament so far.
However, it was not sufficient as Portugal again found the composure down the stretch to seal a famous win.
Sofia Pinheiro and Maria Kostourkova both fired 16 points for Portugal with the latter adding eight rebounds.
