Late heroics by Fanni Szabó helped Hungary defeat Portugal, 48-46, and earn second place in Group B of the Preliminary Round at the Pannergy U18 European Championship Women Division B.

Hungary were down by four points, with two minutes until the end, when Szabó took the game in her hands. First she nailed a huge three-point shot to make it a one-point game, 46-45 for Portugal.

Then, on the next possession for the hosts, Judit Barnai grabbed a crucial offensive rebound and assisted Szabo for a lay-up which gave their team the lead for good.

Portugal didn't score a single basket in the last two minutes, and with three fouls to give, they lost important time chasing the Hungarian players all over the court.

Finally they send them to the line, but it was already too late when Diana Mihaczi made one of her two free throws with one second left to establish the final score.

Szabo finished with 12 points, three rebounds and three assists while Jessica Almeida had 12 points and four rebounds for Portugal.

Still in Group B, Croatia remained perfect after three games as they demolished Switzerland, 87-22.

Ana-Marija Begic had 24 points and 10 rebounds for the winners while Giulia Simioni had almost half of her team points with nine.

Beside the Croatians, Belarus, Greece and Finland remained undefeated after the Preliminary Round.

Greece cruised against Norway, 80-43, behind a brilliant performance by Artemis Spanou, 25 points, 13 rebounds and two blocks.

In the other Group D game, Latvia defeated Austria, 89-71.

Finland was carried by a superb all-around game from Evita Iiskola and won the duel with Israel to top Group C, 67-49.

Iiskola led her team in three stat categories with 18 points, nine rebounds and three assists.

On the other side Keren Mozes posted a double-double, 15 points and 12 rebounds in a losing effort.

Belarus dominated England from start to finish to top Group A, 67-49. In the other game of the group, Germany edged Bulgaria, 65-59, in the tough battle for second place.

Kristin Annawald had a double-double with 15 points and 10 rebounds for the winning side, while Iva Kostova totaled 16 points and led all Bulgarian scorers.
