Barca Make Play For Rubio
Regal FC Barcelona have confirmed making a huge offer to try and land Spain star Ricky Rubio from EuroCup club DKV Joventut.
Barca's technical secretary Joan Creus revealed that the club have offered to pay up to 3 million euros to sign the 18-year-old guard.
Rubio was selected fifth overall by the Minnesota Timberwolves in this year's NBA draft, but he cannot afford the 4.6million euros buyout clause in his contract and the Timberwolves are heavily restricted in how much they can help.
That has made it likely that he will leave Badalona for another European club before seeking to head to the United States next summer.
Barca are desperate to be that club, and are willing to pay big sums to make it happen.
"If this deal happens it will be one of the most important deals in the history of European basketball," Creus said.
"We have made a new offer. We have improved our first offer and have raised it to 3 million euros which is very important as it represents one of the biggest offers ever made in Europe.
"He is a very important players and he is willing to come, so he could be a very important player for us."
Rubio is with the Spain squad as they continue their preparations for the EuroBasket 2009.
He has promised to put his club future to one side to focus on helping Spain achieve their dream of gold in Poland, where they have been drawn alongside Great Britain, Serbia and Slovenia in the group stages.
Meanwhile, another Spain star has completed his move as Saul Blanco has signed for Unicaja.
The 24-year-old guard spent the last four years at Fuenlabrada.
