GAME REPORT

Portugal Earn EuroBasket Berth

For the first time since 1951, Portugal will be participating in a EuroBasket.

The Portuguese clinched first place in Group B and an automatic berth to EuroBasket 2007 with a decisive 69-49 win over Israel.

The last and only time Portugal played in a EuroBasket was in 1951.

Elvis Evora, who entered played averaging 7.2 ppg, had a break-out performance to help Portugal clinch their fourth win in the qualifying round.

Evora scored 27 points to go along with nine rebounds, five steals and two blocks.

The 205-cm center scored 10 of the 27 in the third quarter when Portugal outscored Israel 24-7 to break open a game that had been close at the half.

Trailing by two in the opening moments of the third quarter, Evora scored six straight points for Portugal on a jumper and two lay-ups.

Israel tied the score up at 39-all, and then Portugal responded with a decisive 20-0 run.

Francisco Jordão scored 10 points during the stretch. His two free throws two seconds before the end of the third quarter made the score 57-39.

Paulo Cunha’s jumper to start the fourth capped to 20-0 run and put Portugal up 59-39.

During the Portuguese run, Israel went scoreless for 9:39.

They committed six turnovers and misfired on 10 field goals attempts in that span.

Portugal was able to maintain their significant advantage in the fourth quarter en route to their historic clinching victory.

Israel, which advanced to the quarter-final round of EuroBasket 2005, finished the Qualifying Round with a disappointing 2-4 record.

They will now need to advance via the Additional Qualifying Round, which was actually the same path they took to make it to the Final Round in 2005.
