Belgium have handed their national team reins to Philip Mestdagh in the hope that he can lead the country to its first EuroBasket Women appearance in 10 years.

The former coach of Crack Blue Cats Ieper, the Belgian U20 national team and Lotto Young Cats, Mestdagh most recently served as an assistant on the senior team to former head coach Daniel Goethals.

Now the 52-year-old holds the reins himself.

The name Mestdagh is synonymous with basketball in Belgium because all three of his children play the sport at a high level.

Son Robin competed at Eastern Kentucky University in the United States and is now a guard with Leper in Belgium's second division.

Daughter Kim, who played at Colorado State, averaged 14.8 points per game for Castors Braine this season while helping the Belgian outfit reach the Final of the EuroCup Women.

Her younger sister, Hanne, just finished her junior season at Colorado State.

Both Kim and Hanne are in the Belgium national team set-up.

Belgium last made it to a EuroBasket Women eight years ago when the competition was held in Italy.

Their best finish at the event was in 2003 when the EuroBasket Women was staged in Greece.

In the 2nd Qualification Round for the EuroBasket Women 2015, Belgium won three of their six games and finished third in Group C behind Lithuania and Great Britain, two sides that punched their ticket for the Final Round.
