Nevriye Yilmaz had a game-high 23 points as Turkey secured first place in Group E with a 59-48 win over the Czech Republic, who are now eliminated from EuroBasket Women 2015 with a 3-4 record in the tournament.
Turning Point: After leading 26-25 at half-time, the Turks blitzed clear with a 10-0 run at the start of the third while holding the Czech scoreless for over seven minutes. There was to be no way back, even when a late rally cut the gap to 51-46 with 2:54 left. Eight consecutive points from Turkey and the door was closed.
Stats Don't Lie: Turkey shot 40.7% from the field with the Czechs only 32.3%, with only 18 points in the paint.
Game Hero: Yilmaz was outstanding at both ends of the floor, restricting Ilona Burgrova to 7-for-17 shooting while also denying space for the Czechs to drive into the paint. But Turkey's defence in depth is going to be their chief asset as they head towards their quarter-final on Tuesday.
The Bottom Line: Five years after much of this group reached the final of the FIBA World Championship for Women, we have likely seen the last of many of the golden generation of the Czech Republic with Veronika Bortelova and Jana Vesela expected to leave the international stage. Defensively here, they simply had too many flaws to survive and will now need to rebuild around Katerina Elhotova and Michaela Stejskalová.
