Israel Run Over By Ukraine Train

23 September 2006

Ukraine kept alive their hopes of playing at next year’s EuroBasket Women with a decisive fourth-quarter run to clinch a 91-74 triumph over Israel.

The victory was the eastern Europeans’ third in six games and puts them in a good position to qualify for next year’s big event in Italy.

All five group winners advance to the EuroBasket Women, and the four best second-placed teams.

Romania and Belgium also play on Saturday and have a chance to advance to Italy ahead of Ukraine as one of the best second placed sides.

Israel were seeking their third triumph as well and having won their first encounter against Ukraine, they firmly believed they would triumph but their chances looked bleak when the Ukrainians opened a 65-51 advantage late in the third quarter.

The visitors refused to go away.

Liron Cohen scored seven of her team’s next 14 points, and her lay-up trimmed Ukraine’s lead to 69-65 early in the fourth quarter.

The Israelis failed to score over the next 3:40 while Ukraine score nine straight points themselves.

Israel got no closer than eight points the rest of the way.

Ukraine dominated the boards, pulled down 45 rebounds to just 31 for Israel.

Oxana Pys'Mennyk had a game-high 27 points for Ukraine on six of 14 (42.8%) shooting, including three of five (60%) from the arc.

The 1.92m forward earned numerous trips to the free throw line and make 12 of 14.

For Israel, Liad Suez Karni scored 19 points on six of 10 shooting (60%), including two of three (66.6%) from three-point range.

Karni was a perfect five of five from the line.
