|Ainars Zvirgzdins has been reappointed as te head coach of the Latvian women's national team|
Latvian play-caller Ainars Zvirgzdins will oversee his nation's qualification campaign for EuroBasket Women 2015 after returning to the position he previously held with considerable distinction.
Zvirgzdins memorably took the team all the way to the semi-finals of Eurobasket Women 2007 and then masterminded qualification for the 2008 Olympics in Beijing.
Both accomplishments were then subsequently overshadowed by Latvia finishing seventh at EuroBasket Women 2009 when playing on home soil.
After failing to qualify for the FIBA World Championship for Women in 2010, this so-called under-achievement led to the resignation of Zvirgzdins who at the time, apologised for the team losing four straight games in the tournament.
However, this has since been put into context during the last five years and the Latvian Federation has turned back to him instead of renewing the contract of Aigars Nerips, who presided over Latvia bowing out of EuroBasket Women 2013 at the first hurdle.
The main focus for Zvirgzdins who coaches men's team Jurmala at club level, will be to consider whether it is worth trying to persuade the raft of senior players who have called time on their international careers to consider making a return.
