Quotes Poland vs. Finland

08 June 2013

Poland Head Coach Jacek Winnicki:
"In today's basketball, there is no such thing as a safe lead. Finland came back from 18 points to one point but we were able to pick up our defence in the momentum and had some very important threes by [Agnieszka] Szott-Hejmej. I'm happy that we played very tough defence today because that's the main thing we have to focus on if we want to make it to EuroBasket Women 2015."

Poland player Agnieszka Szott-Hejmej:
"I think we were a little bit too sure about our own lead when we were up by 18 points. I think we reacted too much and weren't patient when playing against their zone defence. This is definitely something we have to work on when we continue our qualification games. It also helped us that Finland missed a lot of open looks when the game was on the line. I'm happy that we showed that we can still compete for the EuroBasket Women 2015 spot and after a couple of days off, we'll continue."

Finland Head Coach Anton Mirolybov:
"Hats off to my players - they played 40 minutes and refused to give up. Playing in front of our home audience seemed to affect us a little bit today; we took some careless shots and didn't rebound. Poland played much more intensely today than yesterday against Belgium and they had learned our playbook. We couldn't get our game going until we started mixing zone and man-to-man defences and picked up the tempo that way. We're planning to win tomorrow's game, end this summer's games positively and start looking forward to next summer's qualification games."

Finland player Reetta Piipari:
"There was a bit of excitement for us in the beginning of the game and Poland played extremely hard defence. They had clearly gone through our set plays and knew how to defend our important plays. But still, we did not execute our own team game. The ending might have been different if we could have managed to gain the lead but Poland made a couple of important threes and that was it."
