|Candace Parker came up with the performance of the night to carry UMMC past Kosice|
Candace Parker was the star of the show as two of EuroLeague Women's top teams lived up to their billing, UMMC Ekateringburg beating Good Angels Kosice 72-68 in Group A on Wednesday.
7,855 fans turned out in Kosice to watch their team take on the reigning champions in a battle of undefeated teams.
Parker was the difference maker as she poured in 35 points - 13 in the fourth quarter - on 13-of-16 shooting, and pulled down 16 rebounds as Ekaterinburg edged it late on.
Farhiya Abdi had a team-high 13 points for the hosts as they slipped to a first defeat but it was the Russian side who moved to 3-0.
Earlier, an A'dia Mathies made three-pointer sparked a 10-0 run into the second quarter, which gave the hosts a lead they would hold until the final five minutes.
The advantage was 58-51 heading into the final period as Abdi made her presence felt.
But when Parker and Diana Taurasi teamed up to score the first basket of the fourth quarter, this set the tone for a dominant final 10 minutes.
Parker would continue to get good looks, close to the basket and while Kosice did their best to hit back, they couldn't keep up - and when it became time to foul, Parker and Anete Jekabsone hit some big foul shots down the stretch to ice the victory.
Ekaterinburg Head Coach Olaf Lange
"Good Angels played a fantastic game. In the first half, they outplayed us in every aspect of the game. Thanks to Candace Parker and our defensive mind set in the second half we were able to turn around score of the game."
Ekaterinbrug Player Candace Parker
"I have to say, that in the first half they were hitting shots and those were tough shots. When we came to the locker room we just realised that we have to do a better job on the defensive end and we also wanted to rebound better and get our hands on more balls."
Good Angels Head Coach Maros Kovacik
"I do have respect for the team from Ekaterinburg but in my opinion, our team was better tonight. That is why I am disapointed. The unique possibility to defeat such a great oponent, as Ekaterinburg is, may not repeat itself. But when you throw away the opportunity to make 13 free throws, one can say that we have lost the game by our own mistakes."
Good Angels Player Miljana Bojovic
"Playing in front of such a great crowd was an amazing and very emotional experience. I think we could have put more effort into the second half and to be honest, if we had the chance to beat Ekaterinburg, it was today, so I am very sad that we have lost this chance. It was hard to stop the opponent in the second half; Candace Parker was rebounding every ball. I am just disappointed that we didn´t give a win to all those people that came to support us."
