|Kia Vaughn's 15 points were pivotal in Prague's opening day win|
Kia Vaughn's flying start set ZVVZ USK Prague on their way to a 57-52 win over WBC Novi Zagreb to open Group C of EuroLeague Women on Wednesday.
Vaughn tallied 10 of her team-high 15 points in the first six minutes to propel Prague into an early 17-9 lead that they never relinquished.
Zagreb continued to battle behind Luca Ivankovic's impressive 21 points off 9-of-12 shooting but couldn't prevent their EuroLeague Women losing streak stretching into the new season and up to eight games.
Prague's lead was 25-15 through the first quarter as Ivankovic had eight points to Vaughn's 10.
The teams traded baskets in the second quarter until Iva Ciglar cut the deficit just before half-time, first finding Milica Dabovic for a three before finishing at the basket herself to bring the visitors back within six (37-31).
The gap was back up to 10 at 45-35 after a low scoring third period however as Prague managed to get the better looks at the basket.
Roles were reversed in the final stanza as Zagreb outscored their hosts 17-12 with Ivankovic going inside for seven of her 21 points - but it wasn't enough for the visitors to stop the rot.
Natália Hejková, head coach ZVVZ USK Prague
"First games are always nervous but I hoped our experienced players would cope with it. Surprisingly it were our inexperienced players who coped with it better. The most important is that we won. I think our defense worked well today so and I am happy for that."
Jelena Dubljevic, ZVVZ USK Prague forward
"We started the game good, very aggressive. But after the first quarter we stopped playing, we let them play their game. In the third quarter we tried to get our defensive game back, tried to play fast but we didn´t have any transitions. Anyway it is important that we won and I hope we are going to learn from our mistakes and we will fix them game by game."
Vladimir Ivankovic, head coach WBC Novi Zagreb
"We were looking for bohemian rhapsody today but unfortunately it didn´t happened. We played very bad in the first quarter. The third quarter was very nervous, that is why there was such a low scoring. The last quarter we played very good but it was not enough. Congratulations to the team of Prague."
Antonia Juric, WBC Novi Zagreb player
"It was our first game in ELW. At the beginning the game was nervous and they made a high difference. In the second quarter we started to play our game and we got back into the game. At the end it wasn´t enough, we lost by 5 points but it was a good game."
