A superb double-double from Anna Jurcenkova helped BK Imos Brno claim a vital and dramatic 71-69 success in EuroLeague Women Group B against visiting Uniqa Euroleasing Sopron.
The Slovak Republic national team star finished with a terrific 16 points and 15 rebounds, as the home side claimed their third win of the campaign to boost their hopes of making it to the play-offs.
Brno had to combat a combined 47 points from Tianna Hawkins and Zsofia Fegerveneky, with the former pouring in 29 points and always looking like she might prove to be the game winner after Sopron made a late surge.
For the most part, it was Brno who held the upper hand after winning the first quarter 22-14 and then extending their advantage to 32-19 after a jump-shot by Tereza Peckova.
Still leading 55-47 late in the third quarter, Brno then watched in dismay as their lead evaporated as Sopron made their move with a 13-4 burst.
Serbian forward Sara Krnjic even briefly gave the visitors a one point lead with five minutes left on the game clock.
In a nervy finale, Brno responded and having already regained the lead, it was a three-pointer by Ivana Jalcova with less than two minutes remaining, which gave them the final impetus they needed to hold off their opponents.
UE Sopron head coach Igor Polenek
"First of all, congratulation to Brno for the win. The game was decided in the first quarter, when we missed so many lay-ups. After that, we played a little bit better, but during the game, we missed too many free throws. We wish Brno luck in the next games."
UE Sopron player Tianna Hawkins
"Brno played really aggressive and we knew we had to keep them away from the boards. But they had some key rebounds and they shot the ball pretty well. My team-mates created good positions for me, that's why I was the best scorer."
BK IMOS Brno head coach Jan Bobrovsky
"It is very valuable victory, the girls fought very hard. As we had less players than usually we tried to rotate to have enough power for the end. Nevertheless, it was always to the exclusion of Sopron coming closer with the score. In one moment it could be the difference of 15 points, though. From my point of view it was a deserved win. But as I am never fully satisfied, the very end of the game could be better. We let the opponents score three points and without them we would have balanced score from both matches."
BK IMOS Brno center Anna Jurčenková
"It was a really tough match. I would like to thank the girls that we fought and managed to win even if we had less players than usually. At the end, our rebounds helped us, the opponents were weaker in free throws. They shot little from the field under the basket and that allowed us to stay in the game. Even if we had many turnovers we managed to keep going and we are very happy for our win."
