|Unstoppable early in the season: Plenette Pierson|
Another high-class contribution from in-form forward Plenette Pierson carried Good Angels Kosice to a 75-64 success against visiting Uni Gyor in EuroLeague Women Group A.
The 32-year-old scooped the week one MVP award and staked her claim to retain the accolade by accumulating 22 points and 10 rebounds as Kosice moved to two wins from as many games.
Overwhelmed by UMMC Ekaterinburg in their opening game of the season, Uni Gyor proved to be a pesky proposition in their second outing and showed some terrific resilience.
They held their own for the first 15 minutes or so, a three-pointer by Anna Lakloth and a score by Joslyn Tinkle helping to keep them on an even keel with their hosts at 26-26.
But, any hope Gyor had of keeping pace with their hosts throughout the contest evaporated when Good Angels Kosice hit the turbo button either side of the half-time break with a powerful 21-8 bust.
It broke the game open and with Uni Gyor struggling to contain the frontline of Pierson, fellow frontcourt veteran Yelena Leuchanka and the impressive 14-point Tijana Krivacevic, a comeback always looked unlikely.
An 8-2 start to the last quarter offered a glimmer of a chance, but Kosice re-asserted their authority to take the win.
Tinkle had 18 points and eight rebounds for the losing team.
UNI Gyor head coach Áron Szentendrei
"Congratulations to the Good Angels. Fouls of our players made the situation easier for the Košice players under the basket, so they scored a lot of points from these positions. After a miserable period we have passed through, we have to start to feel more comfortable, because the players are still a bit under pressure. Despite all, I am proud of my team."
Good Angels Košice assistant coach Peter Jankovič
"We have to be aware of the fact that also this victory is important for us. We have gained the next two points and we started the EuroLeague Women with a 2:0 record, what is possibly the only positive thing about this game. Regrettably, this match was bad from our side, we couldn't make our shots from outside, what could cause a lot of problems for us in the next games."
UNI Gyor player Anna Laklóth
"We were surprised by the fact we could keep the tempo with Košice - a Final 4 participant last season - a team which is very strong also this season. I am also proud we managed to record such a tight result and I hope we can improve from one match to another."
Good Angels Košice player Katarina Pindrochova
"It wasn't the best performance from our side, we wanted to win definitely by a bigger scoring margin - and our game must be better. Some of our defensive patterns weren't so effective as we thought, or as we discussed during practices and another factor was our scoring efficiency, the basket was „haunted" for us today."
