GAME REPORT

Rivas Blow Out Newcomers Tarsus

Rivas Ecopolis fueled hopes of another magnificent run in the EuroLeague Women with a 79-48 rout of Tarsus Belediye Spor on Wednesday night in Madrid.

Miguel Mendez's team surprised all the experts last season when they made it to the Final Eight and then reached the title game.

Now they have opened the 2012-13 campaign with a resounding victory in Group A.

Any hopes of Tarsus bouncing back from last week's defeat at Sparta&K Moscow Region all but disappeared in the first 10 minutes when Rivas stormed into a 22-4 lead.

Anna Cruz had eight of her game-high 18 points in the first frame for Rivas.

Mendez's side, which has some of the most promising youngsters in the entire competition, stretched the advantage to 47-25 by half-time.

They went in front in the third quarter by 42 points and cruised the rest of the way.

Also for Rivas, Aneika Henry added 14 and Olexandra Kurasova 11.

Tarsus, with former Rivas star Amaya Valdemoro in the squad and scoring just four points on one-of-10 shooting, made 29% (18 of 62) of their attempts from the floor.

COACH QUOTES

Quotes Rivas Ecopolis vs. Tarsus Belediye Spor

Miguel Méndez, Rivas Ecópolis coach:

"We started out very strong, with clear minds. I want to mention the great scouting work done by my assistant coaches, which allowed our players to do in any given moment what they had to do. Tarsus played a zone defense, which we already knew they did against Sparta&K. Our backcourt players did really well, and then, it was our frontcourt players who started to join them. I really like how we are solidifying our team."

Queralt Casas, Rivas Ecópolis:

"We did play just like we had planned against a team that can be a tough oposition. This is EuroLeague Women, and there's never an easy game, so for us it's really big news we were able to start this way in the competition. But this is a long and hard road, and we are going to face so many rivals, some of them really dangerous, we will see how we perform when we face the likes of Sparta&K and so."

Erdal Yegin, Tarsus Belediye coach:

"First of all, I want to congratulate Rivas Ecópolis, they won because they were the better team on the court. We had a bad day, we couldn't guard their best players, and did not perform well both in defense and offense. What we need to do now is to forget about this game and look ahead."

Cindy Lima, Tarsus Belediye:

"We are just confused, we were really soft on defense from the start, we didn't face the game as we should have done. We were never comfortable with the type of game that was going on in the court. We really have to make up our minds for the future if we want to start logging good results in this competition, we have to find the right formula."
