It continues to be a dream season for Good Angels Kosice who took outright ownership of top spot in EuroLeague Women Group B with a hard-fought 66-63 success against Turkish heavyweights Fenerbahce.
In a defence orientated physical game, neither team could sustain any real fluidity or offensive rhythm, despite a bright opening which witnessed the home team moving 20-17 in front.
Defence became very much the order of the day and with both clubs locked at the top of the table going into the game, it was unsurprising that what unfolded was an intense battle concerned with fine margins.
For long spells, there was barely a single beam of daylight between the sides, although Kosice did make a move during the third period when a basket by Plenette Pierson put them 50-43 ahead.
By the time Allie Quigley had converted early in the final quarter, the hosts had managed to increase their advantage by a point at 57-49, although they would soon stumble upon a worrying offensive drought.
That allowed Fener to bridge the gap quickly and an 11-4 run finished by an Agnieszka Bibrzycka three-pointer got them back to within a point at 61-60.
But, in a nail-biting finale, Kosice managed to keep their composure from the free-throw line and converting 13-of-14 proved to be priceless in such a close game.
Turning the tables on their opponent, they limited Fenerbahce to just three further points during the last four minutes to sneak the win - although they had to survive last-gasp three-point efforts by Cappie Pondexter and Ivana Matovic which would have forced overtime.
Tijana Krivacevic claimed a double-digit score for the third game in a row with 12 points for the winning team and Esmeral Tuncluer had a similarly tidy 12-point display for Fenerbahce who fell to their third defeat of the season.
Good Angels Kosice head coach Maros Kovacik
"Our performance in defence was the best it has been all season and therefore we won this game. We only allowed them 63 points and that is perfect. I expected, that we would give more points, but now it is not important. Every member of our team played to their maximum and these girls are heroes for me."
Good Angels Kosice captain Lucia Kupcíkova
"We fought to the end and we believed in victory although Fenerbahce was very close. Finish of the match was extremely dramatic, but we had big support from our fans and I want say a big thank you to all people, who saw tonight's great game."
Fenerbahce head coach Roberto Iniguez
"It was a very hard match. Kosice again proves its quality. We can not win without baskets and we missed a lot of baskets in this game. Our shooting was very weak. I want congratulate the home team on their win."
Fenerbahce player Cappie Pondexter
"We did not play very well tonight. The match was very tight, but in the key moments the home team was better. But this is only one loss. Maybe it is better to lose now, than in the play-offs. Our performance must be different than tonights."
