|Summer signing Sara Krnjic had a great start in the new season with a double-double of 17 points and 10 rebounds|
UNIQA-Euroleasing Sopron enjoyed a dream start to the 2011-12 EuroLeague Women with a 77-58 home thumping off Tarbes GB.
Zsófia Fegyverneky, who has joined the club from Hungarian rivals Pecs, got her Sopron career off to a good beginning with 16 points, five assists and three steals.
Twenty-year-old Serbian center Sara Krnjic also shone with 17 points and 10 rebounds.
Krnjic sank all nine of her free-throws and also made four of her six shots from the floor.
Norbert Székely's team never trailed in the game.
Sopron took command with a 14-3 first-quarter run that gave them a 17-6 lead.
Krnic had five points in that spurt.
The hosts then hit Tarbes with another devastating run, outscoring the French 14-5 over the last 3:33 of the first half for a 42-22 lead.
At the break, Krnic led the home side with 13 points and Fegyverneky had eight.
A blowout then turned into a nightmare for Tarbes as Sopron went on an 8-2 run to stretch their advantage to 58-30 with 1:39 to play in the third quarter.
The rest of the game was an exercise in damage limitation for Tarbes.
They walked off the floor with a 19-point defeat.
The French side finished with an assist-to-turnover ratio of nine to 23, and also shot a woeful 18 of 35 (51.4%) at the free-throw line.
The 31-year-old French power forward Naura El Gargati had 18 points but she was just eight of 15 (53.3%) at the line.
Norbert Székely (Headcoach of UNIQA EUROLEASING SOPRON):
"We played in good rythm in the first half. So we had a big advantage for the second half, when we didn't play well against their zone. But it's always good to start the EuroLeague Women with a victory like this."
Pascal Pisan (Headcoach of TARBES GB):
"In the first half we didn't play well. We lost a lot of balls, and missed a lot of free throws, and we had not enough rebounds."
Zsófia Fegyverneky (UNIQA EUROLEASING SOPRON):
"Im very happy that we started the season with a victory! It was very important for our team. We know that we made mistakes in offense, but we will work on it!"
Florence Lepron (TARBES GB Guard):
"The key was the difference in rebounds. We didnt control it, so we had no chance to win."
