Fourth-Quarter Heroics By Aguilar Lift Rivas

19 January 2011

Rivas Ecopolis rode the hot hand of Elisa Aguilar and came from behind in the fourth quarter to prevail at Lotos Gdynia.

Still sky high after winning the Copa de la Reina, Rivas edged the battling Polish team, 73-69.

Should Gospic Croatia upset MKB Euroleasing, then Rivas (5-5) would finish in third place in Group B.

A Sopron victory would secure third place for them since they have a superior goal differential in their two meetings with Rivas.

With 6:45 to go, Lotos Gdynia led 65-57 after two free-throws by Elina Babkina.

Veteran guard Aguilar drilled back-to-back three-balls for Rivas to spark their comeback.

Monica Wright replied with a jumper to take the lead back to 67-63, only for Anna Cruz to hit a jumper and reduce the deficit again to 67-65.

A Milka Bjelica basket restored the four-point Lotos Gdynia lead, but Aguilar hit two free-throws and then buried another three-pointer to put Rivas into a 70-69 lead with 2:09 to go.

Cruz followed with a lay-up and DeWanna Bonner, who had a quiet game, made one of two free-throws for the final score.

The awesome Aguilar ended up with 14 points - 11 in the last quarter.

Amaya Valdemoro poured in a game-high 25 in the victory while for Lotos, Wright had 18.

The American also had seven of her team's 20 turnovers.

Lotos wrapped up their season with one victory in 10 Qualifying Round games.
