Maltsi Wins MVP

20 June 2009

Greece forward Evanthia Maltsi was selected as the Most Valuable Player of EuroBasket Women 2009 after leading the Greeks to fifth place and their first-ever berth at the World Championship.

Maltsi led the tournament in scoring with 22.6 points per game as well as steals (3.1) and free throw percentage (91 percent) while averaging 4.2 rebounds and 1.3 assists and shooting 40 percent from three-point range.

"This is so great. Thank you to everybody. They voted for me. And that's most important. People enjoy my game. They like me. I'm so happy," Maltsi said after getting the award.

"But this trophy is for my team-mates. I want to thank them."

At the press conference following the Greece victory, the 30-year-old USK Praha star thanked her coach Konstantinos Missas for bringing her back to the national team again.

"I'm getting older. But he keeps me here. We have a great atmosphere. This is my real team, the national team.

Missas had plenty of praise for his superstar.

"She is the heart of the team and has great talent. But for me the most important thing is that even though she is a star she listens to the coaches like she's a rookie," he said.
