Late Surge Earns Faenza Triumph

05 December 2007

Germano Zama Faenza trailed late in the game but scored nine unanswered points and marched to 77-70 victory in EuroLeague Women Group D over visiting USO Mondeville.

Edged 68-66 at home in Italy last week by MiZo Pecs 2010, Faenza were desperate to banish the memory of that setback and they did so on Wednesday.

Lenae Williams (USO Basket)
Lenae Williams had 21 points in a losing effort for USO.
Trailing 66-63, Faenza's Cintia Silva Dos Santos made a pair of free throws and Italy national team shooting guard Simona Ballardini split a pair from the line with three minutes remaining to tie the contest at 66-66.

Then with 2:22 to go, Daliborka Jokic made a jump shot and was fouled on the play, she converted the free throw for a three-point play.

Ballardini followed by burying a three-ball with 1:48 remaining to cap the surge and leave the Italian side in front at 72-66.

Caroline Aubert cut the deficit to four with a jumper, but the French side got no closer.

Point guard Marija Eric led five Faenza players in double figures with 17 points, while Lenae Williams scored a game-high 21 in defeat for USO Mondeville.

They have fallen to 1-4.
