2004 FIBA Europe Cup Women victors Baltiskaya Zwezda were given a baptism of fire in tonight's EuroLeague Women opener in Sopron. Baltiskaya were literally wiped off the floor by Sopron and suffered a 57-point defeat.
The basis for Sopron's huge margin of victory was defense. Young center Ivana Matovic (Serbia & Montenegro) set the tone and her inside defense suffocated Baltiskaya's low post game.
Offensively, Matovic, Anna Vajda and Gordana Kovacevic combined for 76 points and Baltiskaya simply had no answers.
The Russian side tried everything to get back into the game, but this was Sopron's night.
By halftime, the result was clear. The only question was whether Sopron would break the 100-point barrier. They did in the 36th minute and completed the game to a standing ovation from the 2,300 fans in attendance.
Sumenkov Sergei, Head Coach, Baltiskaya Zwezda:
"After losing a game like this, its very hard to say anything. Sorry."
Natalia Hejkova, Head Coach MKB EuroLeasing Sopron:
"I'm very happy that we started with my young team the Euroleague season with a great result! All of my players gave something for winning this game. This was my biggest win in Sopron since I became the coach.

"I'm very happy. First thanks to my team-mates. Without them, I couldn't be the MVP. I hope we will play a lot of games like this in the future. I think, we realized everything, what we wanted to do on this game."
